Joe C. Spurgeon, Ph.D., MBA
Certified Industrial Hygienist
Dr. Spurgeon has more than ten years experience investigating
Indoor Air Quality issues involving microbial contaminants, in both commercial
buildings and residential properties. Much of that experience was gained
while working for the US Public Health Service. Dr. Spurgeon has also
worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and for the
US EPA's Office of Radiation and Indoor Air.
He received a multi-disciplinary doctorate in analytical
chemistry and environmental health from the University of Pittsburgh in
1972. This degree led to work with the initial lead-paint poisoning program
at NIST, and then to extensive research in combustion toxicology with
the FAA. Dr. Spurgeon then received his MBA in real estate finance from
the Wharton School in 1981, and worked as a general contractor and residential
builder for many years. He obtained his certification in industrial hygiene
in 1993, and worked as a consultant to the US Public Health Service until
1999, when he relocated to Southern California from the Washington, DC
area.
An important part of Dr. Spurgeon's work is acting as
an expert witness, working closely with attorneys to support the legal
claims of their clients. He has not only taken the time necessary to remain
on the leading edge of technical developments in microbial investigations,
but has also developed his skills in this specialized area.
Dr. Spurgeon's recent efforts have emphasized microbial
investigations in residential and commercial properties. He currently
has more than 200 active investigations, and was featured on the news
program "48 Hours" during a story on mold in the Erin Brockovich
residence..
Dr. Spurgeon has developed and uses an established
protocol when performing microbial investigations, and continues to make
technical presentations describing his work.
